Now, when I reviewed Alien Agenda: Under the Skin a couple of months ago, I included a mini-treatise on how shot-on-video movies have the odd effect of bringing you “in on the joke,” as it were. I can now tell you that this movie uses that effect to its best advantage. Here is the video which knows the strengths and weaknesses of shooting on video, and exploits them to its best advantage.

In a nutshell, here’s the premise: A feisty serial killer wanna-be tracks down Butch Harlo, the most notorious uncaught mass murderer alive, and blackmails him into teaching her the tricks of the trade.

Now, conventional wisdom declared that you have to have at least one sympathetic character for the audience to relate to. When was the last time that the sympathetic character was a serial killer? It works, I swear to God, they make it work.

Given the limits of shooting on video (even very good video, such as this was), Walsh (writer/producer/director) uses two of the cheapest movie-making tools. No, it’s not a pair of breasts; it’s good performances and dialogue. This isn’t quite Pulp Fiction (though it wants to be), but the dialogue’s so unassuming and direct and in-your-face that you can’t help but enjoy the talking-heads scenes in between the carnage.

I don’t want to give anything away — the film’s a joy to discover — so I’ll just make these two declarations:

1) This movie is incredibly tasteless. Pre-screen before showing to your significant other (current or prospective).

2) Do not miss this movie.
