Gallery of the Living Dead

The story is a well-worn one: Through an itty-bitty snafu, George Romero did not properly declare the copyright on the master of Night of the Living Dead, and the result was that every capitalist who got his hands on a print said, “Hey! This is in the public domain! I can sell videos of this!” The legality of this has long been a subject of dispute, but the reality is that NOTLD has effectively become public domain, with copies of various quality being put out by every yahoo under the sun. (In fact, it’s alleged that part of the rationale behind last year’s monumental fan-alienator, the so-called “Special Edition”, was that by adding enough new footage the movie would be considered a new derivative work, and thus a new copyright could be applied for.)

Of course, even though everyone was dealing copies of the same (or mostly the same) movie, everyone had to come up with their own cover art. The result is that there are probably more different video covers for NOTLD than any other movie. Ever.

My purpose here was to compile the most comprehensive gallery of NOTLD video (and DVD and laserdisc) covers on the Web, with a few posters thrown in. I don’t know if I’ve quite achieved that, but it’s still nifty.

A note: I confined myself to English-language editions, since a) many of the foreign language editions are the same artwork as domestic editions with a different text, and b) I don’t want to drive myself crazy tracking down every Serbo-Croatian and Afrikaans video cover. There are quite enough here already. I’ve also skipped those few “double feature” cassettes which pair NOTLD
with something completely unrelated.

Clicking on the thumbnail will take you to a bigger picture of the cover (though in some cases, not much bigger; for the rarer issues, I had to take whatever image I could get).

Special thanks to Homepage of the Dead, which helped me fill in a few gaps.
