Well, the story comes out later that Grant plied here with candy and stuff and apparently was just about to dot dot dot when Kelly showed up. In other words, the filmmakers were playing it really really safe.

I read somewhere that in the scene in which she punches out Candy, she didn’t pull the punch. Apparently she misunderstood when Fuller told her to give Candy a good hard right to the chin. I like Fuller’s films, which are generally a lot more interesting than the mainstream Hollywood movies of the time especially Pickup On South Street.

They used the word “molested” a scene later, when Kelly is in the tank being grilled by Griff. That’s when I said, “Right, so THAT’S what I was supposed to get out of that last scene…”

So they didn't use the word "molested" directly, it was all elliptical? That's really weird, as Dragnet was surprisingly blunt about it on TV some years before. Fuller was a hell of a filmmaker, but I don't think any of his movies are smooth or conventional; there's always some roughness somewhere, and usually more than some.

No, he didn’t really attack her, but (1) in a moment of passion (2) when she caught him committing a felony (3) with a weapon of convenience (a phone) and (4) not intending to kill him so much as simply strike him… I bet when word got out as to what she caught him doing (or what the film would like us to infer she caught him doing), there’s not a jury around that would convict her. Still, you’re right, just being released from jail is a bit too much.

Even if Grant was a child molester that doesn’t justify her killing him (unless he attacker her but that doesn’t appear to be the case the way you described it). She could have just called the police. I don’t see how even if they did find the girl victim that this would help her case any.
